1.    Chapter XXXIII, SFA will hold its Summer 2010 Quarterly Meeting on Friday-Saturday-Sunday, July 16-17-18, 2010 in Madisonville, KY, hosted by Judy Hines.

Lodging has been arranged at the Holiday Inn Express, Madisonville (US 41), 1891 Lantaff Blvd, Madisonville, KY 42431-9403; Tel: 270-821-2121). The motel will have a new name in July -- Best Western, however, the location remains the same. (All you old recon men be sure to set your GPS navigation systems with this arrival point.) (Negotiated) Rates: $70.00 + tax/night, single or double – IF you made your reservations ON or BEFORE June 15, 2010. [Heaven only knows what the rates are now, BUT IF you haven’t yet made your reservations, call the Reservations Clerk or Manager On Duty and grovel and whine (we’ve found this helps) to see if you can still get the reduced rates.]

The chapter business meeting will be held at Judy Hines’ residence (264 Union St, Madisonville, KY 42431-2532, Tel: 270-821-2106, Cell: 919-820-1241) on Saturday (July 17) at 1400 hrs (2:00 pm, for those of you who have gone over to the dark side). We’ve invited several guests to attend the business meeting, so don’t act up. Dinner Saturday evening will be at the Country Cupboard (All You Can Eat) (581 McCoy Ave, Madisonville, KY 42431, Tel: 270-821-6652) at 1830 hrs. (They’ve been warned that we’re coming.)

As advertised previously, Judy has provided us the opportunity to indulge our culture appreciation by attending a performance of the play, “South Pacific,” which will be presented at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts, 2000 College Dr, Madisonville, KY, 42431, Tel: 270-821-ARTS (2787). (“Bull” Durham and Bobby Burke have always enjoyed singing along with the music from this play: theyD’re really good on D“Bali Ha’i” and “Some Enchanted Evening.”)

South Pacific – Music by Richard Rodgers / Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. South Pacific Come experience the magic of Rodgers & Hammerstein again for the first time!

2.     A Message From the Chapter President

I attended the National Board of Officers/Chapter Presidents Meeting at SFA Convention 2010 last week at Ft. Bragg, and I’m looking forward to our July meeting to update you on a number of items that were presented. One thing that was briefed at National was the voting participation in this past election. Chapter 33 had the 2nd-highest number of members to vote and was the chapter with the highest percentage of its members to vote. I want to thank those of you who did vote. We showed that our chapter is engaged and has a membership that is willing to participate. I look forward to hearing from those of you who attended the General Membership Meeting and hope that some of you will help inform the chapter of what you experienced there. On behalf of the chapter I also want to thank Bill Long for hosting an excellent April meeting in Asheville. I hope to see all of you at the July meeting in Madisonville, KY.
Sidney L. Morgan
President
Chapter XXXIII, SFA

3.    Chapter XXXIII’s Spring 2010 Quarterly Meeting held in Asheville, NC on April 9–11, 2010 was well–attended: there were 22 officers and members present (at the business meeting) and one guest [William L. (Bill) Little, D–3669L, and wife, Carol], who became a member. [The names of all members who attended are listed on the attached Minutes of the meeting, as follows:
Enclosure 3 – Minutes of Chapter XXXIII, SFA Spring Quarterly Meeting 041010; pages 3-1 thru 3-4 of hardcopy version.
Enclosure 4 – Agenda 041010; page 3-1, hardcopy version.
Encl 5 – Income and Expense Report Jan 1 thru Mar 31, 2010; page 4-1, hardcopy version, and
Encl 6 – 2010 33 INCOME and EXPENSE WORKSHEET AS OF 033110; page 5-1, hardcopy version.

NOTE: Enclosures 5 & 6 are not included in this newsletter.

All the formal business items are covered in the Minutes of the meeting (Encl 3) and the Treasurer’s Report(s) at Encl 5 and 6. There’s also a brief description of the highlights of the meeting in the Chapter XXXIII, SFA article in the Summer 2010 edition of The DROP which is due out during the month of July.
One of the highlights of the weekend was the chapter dinner on Friday evening at Das Berliner Kindl restaurant: the food (und bier) was plentiful and good. Following the meal, chapter President Sid Morgan presented Gina Mohar, widow of chapter member Vladimir J. (Mike) Mohar, and Annemarie Korchek, widow of chapter member Robert L. Korchek with an SFA Memorial Plaque and a poster depicting a scene from Vietnam combat which had been signed by most of the chapter members.
Continuing the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the granting of the charter (in December 1979) for Chapter XXXIII, Special Forces Association, Sid presented a framed listing of the names of the 16 charter members of the chapter to two more of those members who were present at this meeting: Kenneth D. (Ken) Stickney, D–2591L and Charles G. (Chuck) James, D–2590L. The last of these lists will be presented to the sole remaining (unheralded) charter member at the Summer Quarterly Meeting.
Saturday evening, following separate dinners at a variety of Asheville’s eating establishments, the chapter hurried back to the Hospitality Room for another of Stan (“The Man”) Shank’s performances and demonstrations of how to make rich men poor, poor men weep, and everyone willingly part with their hard–earned money. The auction, once again, replenished the chapter Educational Assistance (Scholarship) Fund. (At the business meeting the chapter approved the award of three Larry A. Thorne Memorial Scholarships, and another is pending.) Unfortunately, the voodoo doll made another appearance and now resides (temporarily, I’m sure) with some unsuspecting bidder on a “mystery” package.
BUT – a GOOD time was had by all. (Thanks, Bill and Kaye.)
