Season’s Greetings to you all. I hope you’ve had a Merry Christmas. I want to thank Jim Hash for hosting the October meeting, and I also want to thank all those who helped. It was a great meeting and I think we had a good turnout. Have a happy and safe New Year’s, and plan to join us in Gatlinburg in January.

Chapter XXXIII, SFA
Winter 2010 Edition 01/01/10
22 - 24 January 2010
“Das dicke Ende kommt noch.” A phrase from a Psychological Warfare pamphlet prepared for the First Special Service Force and distributed on the Anzio beachhead. It translates as, “The Worst is yet to Come.”
1. Chapter XXXIII, SFA will hold its Winter 2010 Quarterly Meeting on Friday-Saturday-Sunday, January 22-23-24, 2010 at the Park Vista Hotel and Convention Center in Gatlinburg, TN. (See the attached Alert Order at pages 24-26.) This is a very NICE hotel – those of you with Internet capability should go online to check out the various amenities, which DO include a heated indoor pool which will be operational during our visit. “El Sid”, our meeting host, has planned well: this weekend is Army Week at the Park Vista. In addition to Chapter XXXIII, SFA there will be two other Army groups there: one from Fort Campbell (type of group unknown) and a group from the Nashville Recruiting Battalion, so this affords us yet another opportunity to show the great unwashed Army what couth, elan and esprit de corps really mean.
This meeting will also again include a formal (catered) dinner, so be sure to (once again) check out your green blazer and regimental tie. Chapter members to help host this event are again sorely needed, and volunteers will be greatly appreciated. (Contact any of the chapter officers to volunteer.)
PLEASE make your motel reservations as soon as possible -- the deadline for reservations at our negotiated rate is January 8, 2010 -- and the deadline for providing a headcount for the dinner is January 12, so PLEASE also send in your meeting registration forms (to Sid) so that we’ll know how many are attending. Hope to see all of you there.
3. Chapter XXXIII’s Fall 2009 Quarterly Meeting held at our home base in Cleveland, TN was well-attended: there were 27 officers and members present (at the business meeting). (The names of all members who attended are listed on the attached meeting minutes.) All the formal business items are covered in the Minutes of the meeting located at pages 5-6. The Treasurer’s Report has been omitted from this newsletter. There’s also a brief description of the highlights of the meeting in the Chapter XXXIII, SFA article in the Winter 2010 edition of The DROP which is due out during the month of January.
The highlight of the weekend was the traditional biennial Chapter XXXIII, SFA Memorial Dinner.
– The first order of business was the installation of the chapter Board of Officers for the 2009-2011 term of office. The chapter Counselor-at-Law, Bert H. Bates, D-3904L, administered the oath of office to the duly elected chapter President, Sidney L. Morgan, D-7863; Vice President, Arthur C. McRae, D-3867L; Secretary, Mitchell O. Greene, D-5029; and Treasurer, James D. Hash, D-49L. (Mitch Greene has since, regrettably, been forced to resign the position of Secretary due to the illness of both his mother and his father. In the interim, until another chapter member volunteers to assume the duties of this job, the VP, Art McRae, has once again taken on this job as an additional duty.)
– Our Guests for the dinner were Mrs. Doris Pandzic, widow of chapter member Eckener Pandzic, D-124L, her daughter Kristy; and her granddaughter; and Mrs. Dong Sook (Kim) Galloway, widow of chapter member Franklin D. (Jack) Galloway, A-1697L and their son, Rex. The Chapter President presented each of the widows with the Special Forces Association memorial plaque with their husband’s name inscribed and expressed the condolences of the SFA and the chapter to each.
– Against a backdrop of the POW/MIA “Absent Warriors” table provided and set up by Bennie and Margie McDonald, the remainder of the dinner program was devoted to the remembrance and recognition of each of the chapter’s departed members, starting with our chapter namesake, Larry A. Thorne.
– The evening concluded with a toast to our departed comrades and the playing of “The Ballad of the Green Beret”.
